A phase 2 randomised controlled trial published in The New England Journal of Medicine reports that a personalised bacteriophage cocktail cleared active carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) infections in 68 % of ICU patients, compared with 22 % in the standard-of-care arm — the largest controlled trial of phage therapy in critically ill adults to date. The study enrolled 148 patients across eight European hospitals, including one site in Athens. Patients received intravenous phage infusions alongside reduced-dose meropenem for 14 days; the combination lowered 30-day mortality by 19 percentage points. Phage therapy works by deploying viruses that selectively infect and destroy the target bacterium while leaving human cells and commensal bacteria unharmed. The researchers caution that phage matching — identifying which phage strains are active against each patient's isolate — currently takes 48 to 72 hours in specialised laboratories, a bottleneck that must be resolved before the approach can scale. A phase 3 confirmatory trial across 20 European sites is planned for 2027.

Consumption in the highest quintile is associated with a 23 % higher risk of type 2 diabetes, an 18 % higher risk of cardiovascular mortality, and a 12 % higher all-cause mortality risk relative to the lowest quintile, after adjustment for total energy intake and overall dietary quality. The WHO notes explicitly that these associations are consistent across income groups and world regions but that the synthesis is observational — causation cannot be established from cohort data alone. The synthesis is the empirical foundation for a formal WHO guideline on food processing classification expected in early 2027. For the eastern Mediterranean region, where UPF intake has grown sharply with urbanisation and income growth, particularly among younger age groups, the findings reinforce longstanding public-health messaging around the traditional Mediterranean dietary pattern, which remains strongly associated with lower rates of chronic disease.
