Monday, 21 July: Colorectal Cancer Is Now the Leading Cancer Killer Under 50

Colorectal cancer has overtaken all other malignancies to become the primary cause of cancer death among adults below the age of 50, according to analyses presented at Digestive Disease Week 2026 and an editorial in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology. Incidence in this age group has climbed by 1–2% each year since the 1990s, and mortality among those aged 20–44 has risen roughly 1% annually. Despite a 2021 guideline change that lowered the recommended screening start age to 45, fewer than half of eligible 45–49-year-olds had completed a screening test as of 2024 — well short of the 80% national target. Warning signs that should prompt medical evaluation in younger adults include persistent bowel changes, rectal bleeding, dark or narrowed stools, unexplained weight loss, and unusual fatigue. Clinicians describe the trend as a "wake-up call" not to dismiss these symptoms in patients assumed to be too young to be at risk.

Tuesday, 22 July: Vancomycin Revived — a Helper Molecule Restores the Antibiotic Against Resistant Bacteria

Researchers from the Moses laboratory, working with Howard Hang's team at the Scripps Research Institute, have identified a way to restore vancomycin's potency against vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE), a dangerous hospital pathogen with few remaining treatment options. The key is a small synthetic molecule called pghi-4, which blocks a bacterial enzyme known as secreted antigen A (SagA) — the mechanism VRE uses to neutralise the antibiotic. In laboratory testing, the vancomycin-plus-pghi-4 combination killed resistant strains that vancomycin alone could not touch. The work is at an early, preclinical stage with no human trials yet begun, but it establishes proof of concept that existing antibiotics can be paired with enzyme-blocking helper molecules to overcome resistance — a template that may apply to other failing drugs.

Tuesday, 22 July: Vitamin B3 Supplement Cuts Glaucoma Risk by About 60% in High-Eye-Pressure Patients

A retrospective study of 2,920 adults with ocular hypertension — elevated intraocular pressure, the foremost risk factor for glaucoma — found that those who took nicotinamide (a form of vitamin B3) were approximately 60% less likely to develop primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) compared with matched controls, with a hazard ratio of 0.42 (P < .001). Nicotinamide users also required fewer pressure-lowering eye drops and laser procedures. The researchers propose that nicotinamide protects retinal ganglion cells through mitochondrial and metabolic pathways. Because this is an observational study, selection bias cannot be ruled out; the authors call for a prospective randomised controlled trial before nicotinamide can be recommended as a formal preventive adjunct. Tuesday, 22 July: Childhood Sugary Drinks Raise the Odds of High Blood Pressure Decades Later

A 25-year longitudinal study of more than 25,000 US participants, published in Circulation and highlighted by the American Heart Association, found that children and adolescents who frequently consumed soda, sports drinks, fruit punch, and sweetened lemonade were significantly more likely to develop hypertension as adults. Notably, 100% fruit juice carried a similar risk to sugar-sweetened sodas, suggesting that concentrated sugar — not the fruit itself — is the key concern. Substituting one daily sugary drink with water, plain milk, or whole fruit was associated with a meaningful reduction in future hypertension risk. The findings reinforce early dietary counselling, particularly as hypertension is being diagnosed at younger ages worldwide, and support recommending whole fruit over juice from the earliest childhood years.

Monday, 21 July: Up to Five Cups of Coffee a Day Is Safe for the Heart — but Energy Drinks Are Not

An American Heart Association review concluded that up to 400 mg of caffeine per day — roughly three to five cups of standard black coffee — does not raise cardiovascular risk for healthy adults and may be associated with modest reductions in heart disease, stroke, heart failure, and type 2 diabetes. Saturday, 19 July: Alzheimer's Sleep Loss Traced to the Brain's Own Immune Cells

A study published in Alzheimer's & Dementia by Shannon L. Macauley and colleagues at the University of Kentucky found that the primary driver of sleep disruption in an Alzheimer's mouse model was not amyloid plaques but overactive microglia — the brain's own resident immune cells. When most microglia were depleted, the mice regained more than two hours of sleep per night, even though their plaque burden remained completely unchanged. The lead researcher described the finding as "paradigm shifting": it identifies microglia as a new therapeutic target for Alzheimer's-related sleep loss, entirely distinct from the plaque-clearing strategies that have dominated the field, and may help explain why sleep deterioration so often precedes the onset of measurable cognitive decline.

Ongoing: Bundibugyo Ebola PHEIC Reaches 2,145 Cases; Imported Cases in France and Germany

The Bundibugyo-strain Ebola outbreak, declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the WHO on 17 May 2026, has now reached 2,145 confirmed cases and approximately 830 deaths — a case fatality rate of roughly 39%. The overwhelming majority of cases are in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (2,124 cases), concentrated in Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu provinces, where ongoing insecurity and inadequate isolation infrastructure complicate the response. Uganda has reported 20 confirmed cases (two deaths), and individual imported cases have been diagnosed in France (June 2026) and in a US citizen medically evacuated to Germany. The ECDC rates the risk to EU and EEA residents as very low, and the CDC has issued a Health Alert Notice to clinicians. Travellers returning from eastern DRC or Uganda should self-monitor for fever, severe headache, muscle pain, diarrhoea, and vomiting for 21 days after last potential exposure and seek urgent medical assessment immediately if any develop.
